Proto-slavjanski jezyk iměl svobodny akcent i bogaty glasovy system. Slověnščina dnes dne nejblizše zachovuje tonovy akcent i jasne glasove, podobno jak bylo v starě dobi. Niektore horvat’ske i bos’n’ske dijalekty takože držat stary naglas i dl’žinu glasov. Slovaksky i pol’sky jezyk čuvaju stari sklopi i nazalny glasove, ale akcent je fiksny. Sěverne russke i bělorusske dijalekty imajut jasne glasove i stari zvuki, ale tonovy akcent je izčeznul.
