3D Perception for Ai machines

I like to plan what the near future will hold for us.

Movies like this one convince me that the 3D perception is the interface between Ai machines and the real world.

Maya 3D: Texture Bump Mapping

I like the simplicity of the example in this tutorial:

- use of simple Paint created pattern
- used of negative value to flip the side,
- user of extremely simple pattern to create a wall

Maya 3D: grass

Today, I was working on realistic grass using "Extrusion" along the curve.

I started with a NURB Circle which I flattened and shaped to resemble cross section of a blade of grass. I extruded along a curve and resized the upper tip to 0.05 - I did not want a sharp point.
Then I resized the bottom of the grass to be a little smaller that the middle.
I applied a file texture with a magnified picture of actual grass.
After I had a single blade I duplicated it adjusting the curve shape each time a little to form a clump of grass blades.

Once I had a clump I duplicated it to have a lawn, each time adjusting what I copy so I don't have a tell-tale pattern.

Maya 3D: Rotation Pivot Point Change

To change the pivot point of the Rotation tool in Maya you have to press INSERT key.

The INSERT key on the Apple MacBook Pro laptop is equivalent to fn + left arrow. To go back to rotation you press the same sequence.

Maya 3D: log cabin: staircase

I am pretty happy with how the log staircase came out.
My goal is to make the cabin to be as natural as possible so the logs on the underside will be naturally round and only flatten where needed.

Maya 3D: log cabin

Maya 3D: log cabin project:

Last night I pretty much put all the exterior logs in place. It is a time consuming task because you adjust each log by its end tip, the logs are not parallel to the ground and they are tapered in shape. The log also have to overlap at the corners correctly, which requires much work as well. I did not adjust the length of the logs and their overhand as I will do it as final touch.

Today, I will start on details, maybe on stone-work of the floors.

Gnomon Maya 3D class - log cabin - wireframe

I created basic plan (layout) of my cabin. I made sure that I planned all features I wanted in the cabin and their layout, for example:

- living room facing south
- bedroom on the open 2nd floor, facing east so I can wake up with sunrise
- the roof overhangs to protect of the noon summer sun, but allowing winter low angle sun
- large garage deep under the house
- front balcony lowered so not to block the view from the living room

In the next step I will replace walls with logs that I started to prepare:

I started Gnomon School of Visual Effects

Today, I started my first class in Gnomon School of Visual Effects. I will be learning how to create 3D effects in Maya, a skill set I can hopefully use at my work in mobile development.

I was very impressed with the final projects of last semester students, there was a Hobbit house and Star Trek Enterprise command room among many other high quality projects. I was amazed what we will learn in one semester.

My final project will be to create interior of log cabin, I call this project "Log Cabin I would build myself"I will post my progress here.

Take time to browse their website, they are really the best FX school out there:

Blender as a professional 3D tool?

Obviously before spending thousands on tools like Maya you may wonder if there is anything there that is free and comparable...

Blender since version 2.5 (and 2.6) made HUGE improvements and should be considered a professional tool for 3D artists.

Watch these videos (published 3 years ago):

"Completed only using open source tools in a Linux environment. Blender is the only tool mainly used for production. Only other tool used was GIMP for texture creation. Post production and editing also done inside blender. The renderer is blender internal renderer."

http://vimeo.com/12202062

It took them 70 work days for team of 6 people, 40 work stations, 45 render blade units. They rendered 11,500 frames and cut it down to 7,500.

Maya: moving your point of view side-to-side on Mac with MagicMouse with no MMB

If you are working on Mac with a mouse without MMB (Middle Mouse Button) you may wonder how to get you point of view to move beyond ROTATE (Command-LMB) and ZOOM (Command-RMB).

One of the ways is install the Settings plugin called MagicPref.app and enable MMB with 3-finger press:

Maya: Sculpt Geometry Tool: relaxing the mesh

When I was learning how to work with Maya I got frustrated watching YouTube because it seemed so easily, yet I was destroying the mesh all the time.

Few notes:

  • I used "Lasso Tool" to select Vertexes on half of the dress I will work on
  • I selected "Smooth Shade All" and "Shadows" and even "high Quality" to see details
  • See the pic for details for "Sculpt Geometry Tool" Tools Settings

Here is a screenshot of settings I use to RELAX the mesh, picture is better than an explanation:

Maya: docking Outliner window

It has been bothering me that Outliner window is free floating, it seems that I could never find a place for it. Since I work on the large external monitor, having it docked inside main Maya window works well for me.

To do this you need to execute this script:

OutlinerWindow; dockControl -area "left"-content outlinerPanel1-label "outliner"-allowedArea "left"-allowedArea "right"-width 250;deleteUI "outlinerPanel1Window" ;

To run this script you open:
(Maya) Window > General Editors > Script Editor

Copy and paste the script and press PLAY (triangle) and that is all.

Here how it looks

3D Game Engines review

Today, I was reviewing the game engines and below are few most interesting (masterpieces really) clips I found. Overall, I find Unreal Engine to be the best, but also cost prohibitive and Unity 3D to be pretty much industry standard, total cost about $4,500 (pro, iOS & Android).

HTML5 and GWT might be the future

WIth all the advances in browser technology and HTML5 I am very optimistic about the future of Google Web Toolkit (GWT) which uses JavaScript.

My only concern is with ability of a lot of users of IE to update to modern browsers, that however, will not stop niche developers (companies) from creating interactive sites, games and communities. There is already a trend to ignore IE6 users altogether.

This is a demo that demonstrates the potential of rendering 3D graphics in the browser, using O3D, an open-source web API for creating rich, interactive 3D applications in the browser. The app shown in the video is coded in JavaScript and HTML and runs in a web browser. Learn more about O3D athttp://code.google.com/apis/o3d
