It is frustrating when you cannot connect to ADB.

Here is a list of troubleshooting items:

Developer Options - ADB

The first one is obviously enabling ADB in Settings > Developer Options

USB role

The USB role for ADB should be the "Device", your computer is the "Host".

  • Device
    • this device is powered by the USB
    • this device can send ADB data to the Host
  • Host Mode
    • this device powers the USB
    • this device sends and receives the data
  • Accesory - this device cannot be a "Host", but acts like one
    • this device powers the USB
    • this device sends and receives the data

Correct DATA USB cable (and hubs)

This one gets me the most often, once you verify that the USB cable works label it.
The same goes for any hub or USB C to USB A converter.

Apple Photos opening every time phone USB is connected

I work developing Android so I plug and unplug different devices all day long. Apple Mac Photos app is opening every time phone USB is connected, which is frustrating and sometimes out of place at work.

To turn off that behavior next time the Photos app opens UNSELECT THIS CHECKBOX:

"Open Photos for this device"

Ability to control i.MX6 board from Mac using USB port.

Settings

I have a following configuration:

- Mac USB <-> DB9 Serial <-> "DEBUG" DB9 <-> i.MX6 SL board's "J17" (UART)

SOLUTION:

I downloaded CoolTerm
http://freeware.the-meiers.org/CoolTermMac.zip

Uninstalled previous versions:
$ sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/ProlificUsbSerial.kext
Password:
$ sudo rm -rf /var/db/receipts/*PL2303*.*

$ sudo rm -rf /var/db/receipts/*ProlificUSbSerial*.*

Downloaded and installed new DRIVER:
FROM:
http://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/Serial-Cards-Adapters/USB-RS232-DB9-DB25-Serial-Adapter-Cable~ICUSB232DB25#dnlds
TO:
/Applications/USB_to_Serial/Prolific_PL2303/Mac/Mac\ OS\ 10.6-10.10/PL2303_MacOSX_v1.5.1.pkg

CoolTerm

You may need to click Re-Scan Serial Ports to detect "usbserial"
The only change you have to make it to change speed to 115200.
